Roll 6 Dice

Six dice is the press-your-luck handful. The games built on it let you set aside scoring dice, then choose between banking what you have and rerolling what is left. Clear the whole set and you usually get all six back, which is where the big turns come from.

When you'd roll 6 dice

Six d6 mostly means one of the Farkle family. Roll all six, pull out the dice that score, and decide whether to stop or throw the rest again. Roll nothing scoring and the turn is dead. Outside those games, six dice comes up when a system wants a very tight bell of results, or when a group needs a lot of numbers generated in a single throw.

Rolling 6 dice: questions

What game uses six dice?

Farkle is the best known, along with Ten Thousand and Zilch, which are close variants of the same press-your-luck game. All three use six six-sided dice, score individual 1s and 5s plus sets, and end a turn the moment a throw scores nothing.

How does Farkle work?

Roll six dice, set aside at least one scoring die, then choose to bank your points or reroll the remainder. Score with every die and you may pick all six back up and continue. Roll no scoring dice at all and you lose everything from that turn.

What counts as a farkle?

A throw containing no scoring dice. Since single 1s and 5s score on their own, farkling means every remaining die came up 2, 3, 4 or 6 with no set among them. Your accumulated points for the turn vanish and play passes on.

Is six dice a lot to roll at once?

It is about the practical limit for reading a throw at a glance without sorting. Beyond six most people start grouping the dice by hand, which is why press-your-luck games cap the handful there and why dice trays get popular fast.
