Roll 5 Dice

Five is the classic set-collecting handful. Games built on five dice care about patterns rather than totals: pairs, runs, three of a kind, five of a kind. That is why almost every five-dice game gives you rerolls, since the fun lies in deciding which dice to keep.

5d6 probability distribution

Each of the 5 dice is flat on its own, but the totals are not. There is exactly one way to roll 5 and one way to roll 30, while 17 and 18 can be built several different ways, which is why the chart leans on the middle.

When you'd roll 5 dice

You roll five when you are chasing a combination. Yahtzee and its Scandinavian cousin Yatzy give you three throws to build a scoring category. Poker dice reads the five as a hand. Liar's Dice hides five under a cup per player and turns the whole thing into bluffing. Generala and Balut follow the same shape with different scorecards. Five dice, one cup, plenty of arguments.

Rolling 5 dice: questions

Which games use five dice?

Yahtzee and Yatzy, poker dice, Liar's Dice with five per player, and the scorecard games Generala and Balut. They all read the dice as a set rather than adding them up, and most give you rerolls to improve a partial combination.

How does Yahtzee scoring work?

You get three throws per turn, keeping the dice you like between throws, then assign the result to one of thirteen categories. The upper section scores a chosen number, the lower section rewards patterns like a full house or a straight. Five of a kind is a Yahtzee.

How is Liar's Dice played?

Every player rolls five dice under a cup and looks at their own only. Players then bid on how many of a given face are on the table across all cups. You either raise the bid or call the previous player a liar, and the loser drops a die.

What are poker dice?

Five dice printed with playing card faces from nine to ace instead of numbers. You roll them and read the result as a poker hand, so five of a kind beats a full house. Ordinary d6s work the same way if you treat each number as a rank.
