The probability of rolling a 7 with two six-sided dice is 16.67%, or 6/36 of the 36 equally likely outcomes. No other total comes close. Seven is also the average roll, at 7, and it sits dead center of the range from 2 to 12.

Why 7 beats every other total

Start with the first die. It lands on something between 1 and 6, and you don’t get to choose which.

Now ask what the second die would need to show to finish at 7. If the first die is a 1, you need a 6. If it’s a 2, you need a 5. Keep going and the pattern holds all the way to a 6 needing a 1. Every single face on the first die has exactly one partner that lands you on 7.

That is not true of any other total. Aim for 4 and the first die betrays you the moment it shows a 4 or higher, because there is no zero and no negative face. Aim for 11 and anything under a 5 kills the roll immediately. Aim for 12 and only one opening face survives.

Seven is the only total that never dead-ends. That single property is the whole explanation.

Seven against its neighbors

Six and 8 are the runners-up, tied at 13.89% each. They lose to 7 by one combination apiece. If the first die shows a 6 you can still reach 8 with a 2, but you cannot reach 6 at all, because that would need a zero.

Seven at the craps table

Craps is built on this number, and it treats it as both hero and villain depending on when it shows up.

The first roll of a round is the come-out roll. On the come-out, a 7 or an 11 wins immediately for anyone betting the pass line. A 2, 3 or 12 loses immediately. That’s why casinos call 7 and 11 naturals and call the losing trio craps.

Anything else, meaning 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, becomes the point. Now the 7 flips sides. The shooter has to roll that point number again before a 7 shows up. Roll the 7 first and it’s a seven-out: the pass line loses, the round ends, and the dice pass to the next shooter.

That reversal is the entire structure of the game. On one roll, the most probable total is an instant win. On every roll after it, the most probable total is an instant loss.

You can see why some points are kinder than others. Chasing a point of 6 means going after a total worth 13.89% against a 7 worth 16.67%, which is close. Chasing a point of 4 means going after 8.33% against that same 16.67%, which is not close at all. Points of 4 and 10 are the worst spots on the table for a shooter.

Seven on a Catan board

Catan puts a number token on every land hex, and there’s no 7 token anywhere on the board. The most common roll produces no resources at all.

Instead the 7 triggers the robber. Every player holding more than seven resource cards discards half, then the player who rolled moves the robber onto a hex, shutting off its production until someone moves it again, and steals a card from a player built on that hex.

Look at the small dots printed under each number token. Those dots are the combination count for that total, which is why the 6 and the 8 carry the most and are printed in red. The design makes the probability chart part of the board. A player who understands that 13.89% beats 11.11% beats 5.56% is reading the numbers the way the game intends.

The hand limit is where the 7 really bites. Sitting on eight cards while waiting for a build is a bet against a total that lands 16.67% of the time.

Does 7 stay the most likely total with more dice?

No. Seven’s dominance is a fact about two dice specifically.

Roll three dice and the range becomes 3 to 18, the average moves to 10.5, and the peak moves with it. Seven becomes an ordinary below-average total worth 6.94%. The middle of the range always wins, and adding dice moves the middle.
