D10 Dice Roller
The d10 is the odd one out. No Platonic solid has ten faces, so the die is a pentagonal trapezohedron: ten kite-shaped faces in two rings of five, meeting at a sharp point top and bottom. Most are numbered 0 through 9 rather than 1 through 10, which is what lets a pair of them produce percentile results.

A d10 has 10 faces numbered 1–10. On a fair die every face is equally likely, so any single result comes up 10% of the time. Rolls run from 1 to 10, the average is 5.5, and the standard deviation is 2.87. The shape it is built from is the pentagonal trapezohedron.

d10 probability
One die is flat. There is no curve and no middle to aim for, because each face has exactly one way to come up out of 10 possible results, so nothing is more likely than anything else. When you'd roll a d10
You roll a single d10 when a game wants ten flat outcomes or a digit for a larger number. Dice-pool systems throw fistfuls of them and count successes instead of adding totals, so a handful of d10s is a common sight at a horror or urban fantasy table. On its own it is also the tidiest die for anything scored out of ten.

Why is the d10 not a Platonic solid?
Ten identical regular polygons will not close into a solid, so there is no ten-faced Platonic shape. Dice makers use a pentagonal trapezohedron instead. Its faces are kites rather than regular polygons, but every face is identical to every other, so the die is still fair.
Does a zero on a d10 mean ten?
On a single d10 read as one to ten, yes, the 0 counts as 10. In a percentile roll the 0 on the units die means zero, and only a double zero across both dice reads as 100. Which rule applies depends on what you are rolling for.
What is the difference between a d10 and a tens die?
Only the printing. A tens die is a d10 marked 00, 10, 20 and so on up to 90, so it supplies the first digit of a percentile result. Some sets sell it as a percentile die. The shape and the internal geometry are identical.
How old is the d10?
The pentagonal trapezohedron was patented as a gaming die in 1906, long before tabletop role-playing existed. It only became a standard part of a dice set once games needed percentile rolls, and early D&D sets often shipped without one.
